School History

Sherman Elementary, serves families in the Near Northside area — parts of Fifth Ward and adjacent neighborhoods within Houston Independent School District (HISD). 

Sherman Elementary serves a vibrant, diverse community where resilience and cultural pride are shared values. As a Title I school, it faces significant economic challenges—but also benefits from a caring, resourceful staff and a strong partnership with parents and local organizations. The school emphasizes academic growth, bilingual support, community engagement, and creating a welcoming environment where every student can thrive.

Student Population

  • Hispanic/Latino, comprising around 88–89%, with African American students representing 8–10%, and White students about 2%. 

  • Nearly 99% of students are economically disadvantaged, and about 73% are considered at-risk.
